MEDIATION TRAINING APPROACH AND OVERVIEW OF COURSE
OFFERINGS Louise Phipps Senft is one of the first conflict resolution
practitioners in the country to use the transformative approach to guide
her work as a mediator and as a mediation and conflict resolution trainer.
Baltimore Mediation was the first mediation firm in Maryland to bring
the transformative approach to the state and to others by offering basic,
domestic and advanced levels of mediation training, all from this lens.
Baltimore Mediation’s trainings were selected for the national pilot
program headed by renowned authors of The Promise of Mediation, Baruch
Bush and Joseph Folger, and we are part of the national Transformative
Mediation Project for trainings across the country funded by the Hewlett
Foundation in the 1990’s. Baltimore Mediation’s three expert
lead trainers have over 70 years of combined mediation and training experience!
Baltimore Mediation’s Basic Mediation Trainings and Advanced
General Mediation Trainings for 20 Hours, 40 Hours, and 60 Hours,
are open to professionals in the public and designed for those wishing
to become mediators or those wishing to learn mediation and conflict resolution
skills for their organization, their family, or their personal lives.
Each course is a stand alone 20 hour course and may be combined with other
courses and taken in any sequence. The courses can be combined in any
combination to add up to a 40 hour course, a 60 hour course, an 80 hour
course, etc. The advanced general mediation trainings are for those wishing
to take on more complex conflicted situations or for those mediators who
wish to continue to stay sharp in their craft. They are a repeat of the
basic series and have proven over the years to yield the highest quality
when repeated. Indeed, no course is ever the exact same and many mediators
trained by Louise Phipps Senft and Baltimore Mediation choose to return
for more trainings over the course of their careers. Research shows that
the more understanding we have of a subject, the more we will absorb and
learn each exposure we have to the subject area.
The certificated basic and advanced mediation trainings focus on personal
conflict style and self-awareness for the mediator; systems approaches;
and ethics and legal issues. All include conflict orientation, conflict
theory, conflict resolution skills, conflict transformation how to’s,
standards of practice, and experiential learning and application with
skillful, supportive and knowledgeable coaching. A number of simulated
mediations are part of each course. The annual course offerings are

which is a dynamic system of nine personality types set in a non-sectarian
spiritual framework. It is meant to help us understand ourselves, the
people in our lives, and our relationship to the greater realities that
guide human evolution. Each of the 9 personality profiles describes a
distinct and fundamentally different pattern of thinking, feeling and
acting, offering profound insight about why we behave the way we do, how
we can change, and a precise path to psychological and spiritual freedom.
The Enneagram has been adapted for use by educators, business consultants,
spiritual directors and a variety of health professionals including psychologists
and physicians. Louise Phipps Senft and Larry Hoover have pioneered using
